History Behind Vitamin C
People back in the 15th century knew that it was
important for humans to have fresh fruits, vegitables and raw meats in their diets. During
this time scurvey was a common disease that effected many people; mainly sailors
and soldiers. In May of 1747 a British surgeon experimented by giving his crew
members two oranges and a lemon per day along with their regular food sources.
The results were that citrus based foods prevented the disease from occuring.
The name ascorbate started being used during the 18th century and 19th century
as the term for foods that would prevent scurvey. These foods were : oranges,
lemons, limes, saurkraut, cabbage, malt, and portable soup. Along with this, they also
believed that you would be able to get Vitamin C from eating raw meats.
